I strongly recommend you to use 'comida' for food and foods as much as you can. there are other words, synomins, I can recall one one which bit more tricky. I will tell you about it anyway, since in books you may find the word:
"Alimentos" is another word for foods, usually applied to the dishes we or someone else is going to consume. It is pointing basically to the content of your plate.
For example "Finish your food" could be translated to spanish as "Termina tus alimentos"
"That bird needs food" could be translated as "Ese pájaro necesita alimento".
Another fact: 'comer' means 'to eat' and 'alimentar' is a synonym. So to say "I eat well" you can also say "yo me alimento bien" (instead of "yo como bien"). I hope this wasn't too confusing.
You can give me what if examples to translate for you if you have doubts. like example: whats spanish cuisine? contrasted with spanish foods?
